WhatsApp reaches 2 billion users

Facebook’s WhatsApp messaging service announced that it now has 2 billion users worldwide.

WhatsApp hit 1.5 billion users as of 2018, which means that this new milestone has taken two years to attain.

We should not forget though that the app is now gaining more recognition in regions like India, where Facebook is already looking at the next stage, and how it can expand into a major WhatsApp business use.

WhatsApp used the milestone to reiterate the importance of encrypting its users’ messages. This is a practice that is coming under an expanding amount of pressure from lawmakers around the world.

Governments have argued that being unable to read people’s messages makes it harder to discover when the messaging app is being used to facilitate terrorism, child exploitation, and other crimes.
