Microsoft Launches Surface Pro X, Pro 7, Surface Earbuds, Surface Duo and more.

Microsoft recently held its annual Surface event and launched a list of new devices. Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro X, the dual-screen Surface Neo, the Surface Duo, and wireless earbuds called the Surface Earbuds. It also introduced the Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Laptop 3.

Surface Laptop 3

Surface Laptop 3 is a powerful laptop that charges fast, and it should give the MacBook Air a run for its money in terms of performance and battery life. It features 10th generation Intel processors, a machined aluminum chasis, USB-C, a bigger screen, and a new modular design.

The Surface Laptop 3 is available in 13.5” and new 15” touchscreens, with new rich color options, and two durable finishes. The laptop has an alcantara keyboard deck, but you can also choose from an all-aluminum design and the new sandstone color in metal.

"The two new Surface Laptop 3 models have a 20% larger trackpad and the keyboards have 1.3mm of travel, a 19mm pitch between keys and a subtle dish on the keys", said Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay.

The 13-inch model weighs 2.7 pounds, while the 15-inch weighs  3.4 pounds.

Both versions of the Surface Laptop 3 feature a full-size USB-A port and USB-C port for modern accessories. The charging connector is on the right side.

The  13-inch model display with 2256 x 1504 pixels, while the 15-inch model offers a resolution of 2496 x 1664. Microsoft says that it has made the panels brighter than the Surface Laptop 2's LCD pane while reducing the power consumption.

The 13-inch model is powered by a 10th-gen Quad-core Intel processor, which Panay says is three times faster than the MacBook Air. It comes with Intel Iris 950 graphics paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage to
start.

"This is the most powerful mobile processor AMD has ever created," Panay said. "It's actually the fastest processor for any laptop in its class today.

"The 15-inch model comes with AMD Ryzen 5 3580U CPU and AMD Radeon Vega 9 or Vega 11 GPU. The latter GPU provides the fastest graphics performance of any laptop device in its class, according to Microsoft.

Both models have up to 11.5 hours of battery life. The new laptops will charge quickly, too. Microsoft worked closely with Intel and AMD to make it possible to charge the Laptop 3 up to 80% in less than an hour.

Surface Pro X

The Surface Pro X tablet/laptop will be released in November, this is a direct competitor to the iPad Pro. The new slim design has 13 hours of battery life, which is three hours more than the Apple iPad Pro's 10-hour battery life while running the full version of Windows 10. The Surface Pro X is a powerful device with long battery life in a design that is lighter and sleeker.

The new Surface Pro X's sleek design is quite different from any device released by Microsoft before. An interesting feature is Microsoft's new custom SQ1 chip designed in partnership with Qualcomm. These chips are usually made for smartphones, but the company engineered the SQ1 chip for computer-like performance rather than smartphone performance.

All the Surface Pro X models come with the SQ1 processor. Depending on the price and model, the starting configuration comes with 8GB RAM, 128GB of storage, while some models are up to 256GB of storage.

There's a premium configuration of the Surface Pro X that includes 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

Surface Pro X is similar to the Surface Pro, including its kickstand design and detachable keyboard. But the Surface Pro X has a more appealing look than the Surface Pro laptop/tablets. The Surface Pro X is thinner at 7.3mm. The Surface Pro X has on a 13-inch screen. This 2-in-1 weighs just 1.68 pounds, which is lighter than the Surface Pro 7. By comparison, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro weighs 1.4 pounds.

There are just two USB-C ports on the left side, while the iPad Pro has a single USB-port.

The Surface Pro X has an optional Slim Pen. It fits into the notch on the detachable Signature Keyboard. Note that this groove secures your pen while charging it.

The Surface Pro X delivers better battery life, faster performance, and a thinner, lighter design.

Surface Earbuds

Microsoft said their new Surface Earbuds will be available later this year. The tech giant is joining Amazon Echo Buds, Apple AirPods, the Powerbeats Pro and Sony WF-1000XM3 in the wireless earbud market.

While we await more information, the company said the Surface Earbuds will feature omnisonic sound, 24-hour battery life, a charging case, and touch controls. The tap-and-swipe controls will allow you to access Spotify playlists without touching your phone (Android users) and on-the-fly translation capabilities, with support for many languages.

The Surface Earbuds were built with productivity in mind, so there's Cortana, Office 365 integration, and two microphones in each bud to improved call quality. With the Office 365 integration, users will be able to dictate words to Office documents.

Surface Neo

The event saw the launch of the first foldable-screen tablet from Microsoft called Surface Neo. Full specifications have yet to be disclosed, but we know the dual-screen device has a 360-degree hinge in the middle and features a keyboard that can be flipped around to use on top of one of the displays.

"Attached with 360-degree hinges, the displays have more than 60 microcoaxial cables running between the hinges, each thinner than a human hair", said Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay.

Weighing just 655 grams and at 5.6mm thick, the Surface Neo uses the thinnest LCDs ever created.

The new device will run on Windows 10X, a new operating system created for dual-screen devices. The device will come with an Intel Lakefield hybrid processor. A chip that uses a combined performance-focused 10nm Sunny Cove CPU and multiple smaller and more power-efficient 10-nanometer Tremont Atom cores – to achieve a better balance between power and battery life.

Microsoft Surface Neo like other Windows 10x systems isn't likely to be available until 2020 holiday.

Surface Duo

Microsoft also showed off the new Surface Duo dual-screen Android phone that will go on sale next year. Microsoft tried for two decades to make OS for mobile phones but later gave up on the effort. The company couldn't compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS. So Microsoft is finally partnering with Google to launch an Android phone.

The company admits that getting back into the phone market won't be easy, so it opts to expands its Office software and other services to compete with other devices. The company's first Android phone will take that further.

"Coming out with a new version of Windows [OS] on a phone ... when the market's settled on Android and iOS doesn't make sense," Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi said. "Using Android, which is an established OS with an established ecosystem, and optimizing Microsoft first-party apps for it ... is going to be much easier than trying to bring Windows to a phone."

Microsoft is hoping the smartphone can be the first successful dual screens in the market, and it is betting that dual screens are the future.
