Funke Opeke - West African Bandwidth Queen


Ms. Funke Opeke, 58, is the founder and CEO of MainOne, previously Main One Cable Company. MainOne is a broadband infrastructure company providing innovative telecoms services and network solutions across West Africa.

Opeke is an Electrical Engineer with Bachelor's and master's degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and Columbia University respectively. After working in ICT in the US for companies such as Verizon Communications, she returned to Nigeria to solve the countries low connectivity problem.  In 2005, she joined MTN Nigeria as a chief technical officer (CTO). She served as a consultant at Transcorp and chief operating officer of NITEL for a short period.

In 2008, she turned her engineer's eye towards the ocean, raised $240 million in funding and laid 4,400 miles of fiber optic cable from Nigeria to Portugal. Big businesses quickly followed. Online banking, booking services, and retail websites helped build what is now Africa's biggest economy.

MainOne is West Africa's services and network solutions provider. The West Africa's first privately owned, open access 7,000-kilometer undersea high capacity cable submarine stretching from Portugal to South Africa with landings along the route in Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria.
